Climate Change and Cultural Models

Next

Kathy Halvorsen is an environmental sociologist at Michigan Technological University doing scientific research on people and climate change.  She is studying how people apply cultural models (combinations of beliefs and values) to understanding climate change.  She is also interested in how those cultural models affect their support of formal social norms, such as government policies, that try to reduce climate change.  For instance, her work currently focuses on understanding what people in the upper midwest believe about state and federal government policies that encourage the development of cellulosic ethanol.   In order to do this, she is working with a group of researchers in Michigan Technological University's Environmental Policy Program to interview and survey people across Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.  Their results will be published in scientific journals and distributed to government officials.
