Atmosphere The gaseous layer surrounding the earth.
Carbon sequestration Removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by growing plants or storing carbon dioxide in underground mines or other cavities.
Climate change The long shift in the earth's climate as a result of human activities and natural cycles.  One effect is global warming, but there are others, such as changes in rain and snow patterns.
Deforestation Cutting down trees, without replacing them, in order to use the wood or to use the land for new activities, like farming or housing developments.
Fossil fuels Materials, like coal, natural gas, and petroleum that are carbon rich and excellent energy sources.  Burning these materials releases carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.
Global warming Warming of the earth, including land and oceans, due to increased greenhouse gases in our atmosphere and the greenhouse effect.
Greenhouse effect Adding gases like carbon dioxide to our atmosphere causes it to act more like a greenhouse, trapping more heat from the sun and warming the earth.
Greenhouses gases Gases that tend to trap solar heat when added to the atmosphere.
Kyoto Protocol An international policy adopted by most United Nations countries that commits them to lowering their greenhouse gas emissions to prevent future climate change.
