Sociological Approaches to Understanding Human Relationships to Environment

Next

Climate change is an example of an important environmental problem.  Environmental sociology is a scientific discipline concerned with problems like climate change.  Sociology is the study of human societies. It is particularly valuable as a tool for understanding and solving problems like climate change.  For instance, climate change is resulting from society's heavy usage of fossil fuels, like gasoline.  Sociologists study beliefs (what people hold to be true), values (what people care about), and norms (the rules people use to guide their behavior).  Environmental sociologists would say that we are causing climate change because we believe we must have things like cars. We value the mobility they give us.  This results in the adoption of normal behavior, like driving most of the places that we have to go, causing us to impact our climate.
