What Problems will Climate Change Cause?
Potential Impacts on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan |
 |
How will the Upper Peninsula of Michigan be affected by climate change? The climate of the Upper Peninsula will become warmer and drier over the next century. Extreme hot temperatures will become more common. Snow levels are expected to increase in the winter, with summers getting hotter and drier (UCS 2003). Farming is an important part of Michigan's economy. With hotter, drier summers, farmers may have a harder time growing crops unless they irrigate them with water. Lower water levels of Lake Superior are probably caused, at least in part, by climate change. These lower water levels are making it harder for boaters to dock their boats, creating difficulties in the shipping of goods around the Great Lakes.
